New Employees

Gerontology, Aging, and job opportunities

I recently attended a conference at a local community college that featured a certificate in Gerontology.  With the growth DMS has seen in the home health market and working with the aging population, I thought it would be beneficial for me to understand the program better.  I was very impressed and look to have some of our internal employees who work in home health to attend some classes to better understand some of our clientele.  Also, we have candidates call DMS every day who want break into healthcare but have no experience.  We often tell them to volunteer to gain experience.  Getting that first opportuinity can be difficult.  However, we can now advise those individuals to take a class on Gerontology. With the current and projected growth of home care and the need to care for the now aging Baby Boomers, this is a great opportunity for jobs and growth in the coming decades.  If you are looking for a career with job security and prospects for growth - check out Gerontology.

LONG TIME

It has been a long time since I have posted any updates!  It has been busy here at DMS.  Since we moved into the new suite in November it has been a whirlwind.  Our growth has continued and we are fortunate to be in such a great sector.

Increased Referral Bonus = Holiday gift dollars

We recently increased our Referral Bonus as we are in need of more in-patient specialty RNs.  If you refer a specialty nurse who works 100 hours for DMS, we will pay you $250.00 for the referral.  Please keep it mind as you are working with other health care professionals.  It could help pay for Christmas gifts this year!

Holiday Pay

As a benefit to our outside staff, we pay a Holiday bonus to employees who have worked in excess of 1000 hours in the prior 6 months.  For the most recent Holiday (Independence Day) DMS paid out $1,400.00 in Holiday pay!  That is a testament to the longevity of our staff and the strong client relationships we have developed.

Client Recognition!

Just yesterday, one of our home care clients came to our office and recognized us for outstanding service and for going above and beyond for the well being of the patient.  We were very flattered and proud to be recognized in such a manner.  It is a testament to how hard we work here inside the company and what great work our caregivers do each and every day with all the clients and patients they interact with.

Positive News on Staffing

 

In an industry publication, I recently read an article reagrding a survey of staffing buyers.  I have copied some of the highlights as it relates to our industry.  It is good news for us.  I hope you find it interesting.

 

  • There is near unanimous agreement among contingent staffing buyers that the use of contingent labor saves money—86% reported so.
  • The median savings reported by buyers was 13% of total expense. This represents an increase in the median savings reported last year of 9%. This increase in savings may be related to the on‐going economic recovery.

Do DMS employees love DMS?

Referral Bonuses

 

We are requesting more referrals from our valued employees.  To help that along, we have updated our Referral Bonus policy.  Here is how it works:

 

If an employee refers a Tier I employee (front office, med records, med reception) - there is a $50.00 bonus paid to the referring employee after 100 hours.

 

Tier II employee (Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist, Biller) - $75.00 

 

Tier III employee (RN, LPN, Lab Tech) - $100.00 

 

Pretty simple - please send them our way and make sure we know it is a referral from you.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Good News

 

In case you don't follow the economic indicators on a national scope I thought I would provide an update.  The general indicators and GDP projections are more favorable than they were two months ago.  For staffing, that means that demand for contingent staff is likely to result.  In 2010 the growth was due to the fact that companies were reluctant to add full time staff.  This year it will likely be from just growth and additions.  Specifically for DMS we are seeing a continuation of last year's growth. 

 

Additionally, we just implemented our 401k plan (with match and profit sharing) for all employees.  Signups are going on right now.  If you have questions, please call Jeanna (HR Manager) at the office.

Recruiting

 

We have changed some internal operations here at DMS in the past month.  As we have grown in the past several months, our recruiting needs have increased to the point where we have had a difficult time keeping up.  In response to that, we have changed our internal structure.  We have changed Becky Sharum's responsibilities and moved her into the recruiting department with the title of Recruiting and Onboarding Specialist.  The "Onboarding" part means that Becky will transition our employees from a "Recruit" status to "Active" and ready to work status, ensuring that all requirements have been completed for each employee.

 

We are pleased with the results so far, as each employees roles are more defined creating a better balance for all.  Let us know if you have any questions.

401k

 

I am pleased to announce that we have added a 401k for our employees this year.  Those qualified (1 year of service and 1000 hours worked last year) will be invited to participate in 2011.  Our plan includes "employer matching" and an end of year employer discretionary profit contribution to individual participants.

Healthcare staffing needs and Healthcare Reform

 

January 2011 has picked up right where 2010 left off - which is many needs for Nurses, Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists (to name a few disciplines).  The more I learn about Healthcare Reform (including the Medicare changes) the more I believe it will positively impact healthcare staffing.  More patients = more staff needed - pretty simple.  These increasing needs will continue. Another New Team Member

Applying made easier!

We at DMS are days away from implementing a new recruiting and on-boarding system that will eliminate much of our application paperwork.  Those of you already employed by DMS will remember how much paper there is to deal with.  We will still have all the forms, yet they will all be completed online.  We will still of course need to collect hard copies of licenses, CPR cards, etc.

Flu Shots

We highly recommend getting a flu shot this year, especially if you work in healthcare.  The CDC recommends that all individuals 6 months and older ger immunized from the flu.  The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season.

Get immunized and increase your chances of staying healthy!

Unemployment

Unemployment is not a pretty word.  I do have some good news in this regard however.  As part of the changes to the last unemployment extension, "EUC Fix" has been added. The unemployed can now take a temporary placement without fear of losing their unemployment benefits, or having them lowered in the future.  This has been a very real issue within our company and I am sure among all staffing companies.  We have had many potential employees turn down positions due to the fact that they don't want to jeopardize their unemployment benefits.  It's a shame the benefit setup "disincentivized" taking a job!  However, it seems like it has been corrected which is great.

New Team Member

I would like to welcome our newest internal team member, Bonnie Swanson, RN, BSN.  Bonnie started last week and her responsibilities center on recruiting and retaining talent for DMS.  As employees you will be hearing from Bonnie as her training winds down in the next few days.  Feel free to call and introduce yourself to her. 


I recently read in an industry publication that despite the sluggish economy, more and employees (up to 75%) in North America feel secure in their jobs.  I would think in healthcare that number would be even higher.  With the recession and need to reduce payrolls, those employees who have "hung on" to their positions have stayed for a reason - that is to say they likely would have been let go by now.  At DMS, we have noticed an upswing in business since last fall, which we believe is a sign of a turnaround for the economy.
